Police were involved in a multi-vehicle car accident that took place early this morning on I-45 caused by a suspected drunk driver.

The accident occurred around 1:45 in the morning, on the northbound lanes of Interstate 45 near Beltway 8. Police officers had pulled over onto the side of I-45 to assist other drivers involved in another accident that had occurred earlier that morning.

The accident occurred when a woman driving a grey Ford Fusion drove into the back of a Houston police vehicle. The force of the impact was so hard that it spun the police patrol car, causing it to hit two other emergency response vehicles on the scene.

The driver, suspected of driving while intoxicated, had to be pried out of her vehicle. The suspected drunk driver suffered a few broken bones and was transported from the accident on I-45 to a local hospital, where she is being evaluated for a DWI. None of the officers on the scene were injured.

The freeway was reportedly closed off for several hours, and reopened at about 5 a.m. this morning.
