A Harris County deputy constable was killed in a fiery car crash by a drunk driver on Saturday night. The accident occurred on the Sam Houston Parkway at Fondren, a few minutes before 6 p.m.

Police say that the constable was parked on the side of the southbound lanes of the Sam Houston Parkway waiting for a suspected drunk driver that dispatch had alerted her about. The drunk driver in question then failed to drive his Ford F-550 in a single lane and struck the deputy constable’s vehicle. Her SUV was pushed several meters down the road and caught fire.

Witnesses attempted to extract the constable from her vehicle following the crash, but were unable to do so. The deputy constable was pronounced dead at the scene. The drunk driver attempted to flee the scene, but was stopped by nearby witnesses. The driver was taken to a nearby hospital, and will be charged with intoxication manslaughter of a peace officer.
