Two Houston police officers have been injured following a crash caused by a drunk driver. The incident occurred Saturday night, in southeast Houston, at 10 p.m.

According to officials, the officers’ vehicle was stopped in the eastbound lanes of Almeda Genoa Road, blocking traffic as energy crews worked to fix a utility pole damaged by another crash that occurred earlier that evening.

The officers were helping direct traffic when a drunk driver manning a silver Honda Accord drove through the cones and struck an officer standing nearby the patrol vehicle directing traffic, then struck the patrol car. The officer he conducting traffic was hospitalized, but he has since been released. Another officer inside the patrol car suffered head and neck injuries, but officials say she is expected to survive.

Officers say that the drunk driver was also injured in the crash, and that he is expected to recover. The at-fault driver, a 36-year-old man, was transported to a nearby hospital with minor injuries following the collision, and has been charged with driving while intoxicated.
