A teen girl has been pronounced dead following a car crash after her vehicle drove over the Brays Bridge guardrail and plunged into the bayou. Police state the accident occurred at 100 Broadway, on the east side of town, at about 1 p.m. Monday afternoon.
Officials say that three teenagers –two girls and a boy—were in a car heading – on Broadway near Hockley Street when the driver lost control of her vehicle. She went over the guardrail of the bridge and hit the water.
According to the Houston Fire Department, the boy was able to extract himself from the vehicle. A 17-year-old girl sitting in the passenger seat was rescued and transported to a nearby hospital, where she is in stable condition. The driver, a 16-year-old girl, remained trapped inside the vehicle. The Houston Police Department dive team recovered her body, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials state that they are working to uncover the cause of the Brays Bayou crash, though they believe speed was a factor. Houston Public Works is working to repair the bridge and replace the damaged guardrail.
